The top can be hand washed in lukewarm water with a little special detergent or baby shampoo. Give it a light rinse, rinse, don't wring, just lightly towel dry, and spread it horizontally on a flat towel to dry naturally. Do not leave it to dry in the sun, the fabric may change color. You can then iron it at a low temperature without steaming. Some washing machines even offer special programs for delicate materials. But please ask your washing machine about that.
